Gemma Black: Looking Back to Looking Forward: Calligraphy – Its History, Its Mystery, Its Wonder

  • Plymouth Congregational Church – Jackman Room 1900 Nicollet Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55403 (map)

(The actual program begins at 7:00, but you are invited to join us at 6:30 for a social time during which you can visit the library table, the demo corner, the Show and Share table, and have refreshments.)

Our program will be a spirited PowerPoint presentation that will start in the years BCE coming up-to-date chronologically, working our way through the myriad of lettering genre.

We will discuss what was going on in various countries during writing's evolution and the magic of how scripts became connected to each other through transitional hands.

In other words, we start with the Ox ploughing in his boustrophedon ways ever-sowing and reaping new marks and ways of expression.

And we’ll end with the state of the art today leaving open for discussion, the future.
