Letters With Light

The Most Fun You Can Have With a Pencil!

Conducted by member Jean Formo

Whether you like to draw or think you can't, this experience is for you! Imagine the alphabet as a graphic dance troupe, and you are the choreographer. Unlikely partners move together at your bidding while form and line join together on the page. Color and light partner their energies to produce the Grande Finale! Learn a few new dance steps with graphite and colored pencils to create your own "Letters With Light" on paper and drawing film. Make a special portfolio in class to hold your latest dance moves!

Students Bring:

  • 4-6  9x12 sheets of smooth white drawing paper such as Strathmore, 1264 Fabriano, or any fine Bristol (These could be in pad form or sheets)

  • 2 sheets of black or dark blue smooth drawing paper

  • Borden and Riley layout/marker paper #37, 9x12 pad (or equivalent)

  • Assorted colored pencils like Prismacolor, Spectracolor, Faber-Castell Polychromos, Koh-I-Noor, Hardtmuth Polycolor, Derwent, Pablo Caran d’Ache

  • 3 white colored pencils: Stabilo Aquarelle  #8052  (Other white pencils will not work as well as this one)

  • Drawing Pencils with various soft/hardness: HB, 2H, 4H

  • Tombow Mono Zero 2.3 fine eraser with refills

  • Pentel Clic eraser (or similar style)

  • 12 inch ruler

  • scissors

  • 4-6 colored photographic images like a single flower, shell, leaf, coffee mug, butterfly, a few smooth pebbles, a fruit, small feather.

  • Pencil sharpener

    • Highly recommended: MUJI Manual Pencil Sharpener  - Jean’s favorite for ALL wood-shaft pencils. Very affordable, and sturdy. Takes a polite nibble instead of a greedy gulp, and leaves a very sharp point.  Available on Amazon.com. Get the one with the little square “ears” on top. Most other sharpeners, including electric, will consume your colored pencils very rapidly. This one makes them last.

Jean Brings:

Art papers for portfolio construction, drafting film for drawing, instructional handouts.

Cost:

Members: $150

Nonmembers: $165

plus a $12 supplies fee payable at workshop (cash or check preferable)

Class size is limited so register early! You can reserve your spot in Our Store.
